What to keep in mind when you are caring for a patient with CKD

CKD complicates the management of hospitalized patients and individuals seeking care in the ambulatory setting. Adverse events in this population include not only medical errors which lead to hospitalization, prolonged hospital stay, or death, but also include unnecessary deterioration in renal function. As there are few treatments that arrest or reverse CKD burden and progression, great effort should be put into avoiding interventions that worsen renal function. Some recommendations for the general medical care of patients with CKD are provided on this website as a guide to ensure patient safety and improve health outcomes.
