IP addresses
We collect and log the Internet Protocol (IP) address of all visitors to An IP address is a number automatically assigned to your computer whenever you access the Internet. IP addresses typically consist of four numbers separated by periods and look something like

IP addresses allow computers and servers to recognize and communicate with one another. Since these numbers are usually assigned to internet service providers within region-based blocks, an IP address can often be used to identify the region or country from which a computer is connecting to the Internet. An IP address can sometimes be used to show the user's general geographic location (includes country, region/state, city, latitude, longitude and telephone area code.), and a location specific map.

We collect IP address information so that we can properly administer our system and gather summary (aggregate) information about how our site is being used, including the pages visitors are viewing and which topics are most popular among users. We may share this summary information in reports issued to our sponsor, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, or in publications to the general public; however, these reports will not include any personal information or specific IP addresses. To further maintain your anonymity, we do not associate IP addresses with records containing personal information. We will only use IP address information, to personally identify an individual computer when required to do so by law enforcement authorities.

Health tools information
You will need to provide personal health information in order to use the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) calculator, which asks for a laboratory value (creatinine), gender, race designation, and age. However, this information will not be stored or shared with others.

We use information from the surveys on to better understand the needs of our users and to improve the website. We may share information from surveys with third parties who perform web management services for our site. However, responses on surveys will not be linked to any personal identifying information. Also, we may use information from surveys in an aggregated, de-identified form for release to the general public in the form of reports or publications. Our surveys do not collect personal information and we request that you do not add personal information in the comments’ section.

How we protect your personal information
All data that you enter on this site are encrypted with secure server software (SSL). The encryption means that your data are protected while they are being transferred over the Internet to our servers. Your data consists of the IP address of the computer you are using and your responses to the survey on the website. Once your data reach our servers, the same state-of-the art security software that guards the University of Maryland, School of Medicine essential data protects your data as well. In addition to using the most secure technology available, all data is de-identified and is not traceable to an individual user.

Safe Kidney Care research study participants
Some visitors to are participants in the Safe Kidney Care research study. Participants in this research study have provided us with their informed consent to track their use of the website. These visitors have received a tutorial on using the website and how to enter in their website ID, located on a medical alert bracelet provided at study enrollment. The ID number does not provide the user access to any individual’s personal medical information or any other personal information. Participants in this research study have also been instructed to invite family and friends, as well as their health-care providers, to visit the website. While, we maintain a log that links the bracelet ID to the research participant, we will not know the identity of family, friends, or health-care providers who visit the website. Visitors to this website can access all the content and submit comments without entering the bracelet ID number.

Changes to our Privacy policy
We may occasionally update this Privacy policy. You will see the word "updated" followed by the date near the bottom of all pages on the site.
